First Impression

With less than an evening of using tumblr I already have a pro and a con to using it. The con is I was actually using the mobile app to create my first post. At some point I switched to gchat or Pandora on my phone and when I went back to tumblr I got the splash screen. It was news to me that the tumblr app was actually closed at all, but when I saw that screen I knew all the text I had typed out on a software keyboard was likely lost. Sure enough this was confirmed when I looked in the drafts and had none. 

This will probably never be an issue again since I will be saving drafts BEFORE switching apps from now on, but, it was annoying nonetheless. 

The pro was that while I was looking at the source of tumblr I saw they have ASCII art at the top of their pages. Which obviously is super win in my book. Well done, tumblr.

Hello, tumblr

The first time I had ever really considered starting a tumblr blog was a few weeks ago when a friend of mine mentioned maybe I should consider using it because it had cool features like posting from a mobile app or from text message. I dismissed it at the time because I was pretty sure you could at least post from a WordPress app if you wanted. Not to mention I never had the inclination to post while mobile so it didn’t seem like a reason to switch.

While I am not what most would consider a “frequent” blogger, I do pay close attention to my blog’s analytics. The thing that stood out most to me recently was the load time of my pages. The average load time was way higher than what I would consider acceptable and this is probably due to a combination of WordPress itself and $10 hosting on GoDaddy. 

GoDaddy’s original stance on SOPA had left a sour taste in my mouth and their reversal of opinion hasn’t done much to make that taste go away. So it seemed like a decent time to start looking to alternative to my current blog solution. This might only be a stop gap until I get an Amazon box up and running but if I like what I see, maybe not.
